Sea Turtle Nest Update for DeBordieu from Betsy Brabson

Dear Volunteers, Goodness gracious ...we had a big day with activity in all 3 areas!North: Frankie had a natural nest (DEB17) 16 yds. north of the 12 mile marker at Prince George....go Frankie!Middle: Paula also had a natural nest (DEB16) 80 yds. south of Walkway #3. She had some helpers and took their photo with the protected nest (photo). Thanks for educating the vacationers, Paula!Hobcaw: Martha and I were walking for Kathi and had a crawl 2 yds. south of Walkway #12. Knowing we may have more activity down the 2 miles of Hobcaw, we asked Bill to call in reinforcements. Jan and Mike came to the rescue and worked on the crawl. They located the egg chamber and feeling it was in a washover-prone area, relocated 80 eggs (3 broken down in chamber) to 65 yds. south of Walkway #12 (HOB19). Thanks for the help Jan and Mike! Martha and I had 2 crawls that both appeared to be nests but had no broken vegetation or mounded sand and after probing decided they were false crawls. Bill will give them another try on his walk tomorrow. One was located 19 yds. south of the 14 mile marker (FC15). The other was 95 yds. south of mile marker 8 (FC16). There was a nest laid 31 yds. south of the 15 mile marker that Martha located. It was laid in front of a majorly scarped dune so we elected to relocate 137 eggs (plus 1 for DNA) to 70 yds. south of the 14 mile marker. On our trip down this morning, we were around the 15 mile marker when Martha spotted the little black creature Robin had photographed on Tuesday. We were able to get the attached photo. Maybe the DNR folks can give us a positive ID from this shot. We saw numerous coyote prints over several of the nests on the southern end of Hobcaw (photo)....yikes.DeBordieu 17 Hobcaw 19 SCUTE 59 North Island 94 SC 1696

Hobcaw: There was a fresh crawl this morning and Becca, walking with Bill, located the egg chamber! The nest was 5 yds. north of the 13 mile marker, laid in a good location and left natural (photos). Congratulations Becca on your 2nd nest this week! They also checked out the 2 crawls from Thursday and agreed they were false crawls.
Article: The Georgetown Times ran a feature article today about loggerhead nesting numbers in the S.C.U.T.E. area. Reporter Chris Sokoloski, also one of our volunteers, did a great job and featured a photo by our Cindy Silvers of her June 17 nest at Prince George.

We will be switching out some of the heavy plastic meshes on the North/Middle to take to Hobcaw with the more flimsy orange meshes since we don't have a depredation problem in those areas. We are also running out of the yellow tent pegs and will have to use the old gray PVC stakes.
