Blue Bird Webcam Update at Hobcaw

Uh Oh. Read below for an update from our neighbors at Hobcaw about the bluebird webcam that I mentioned in an earlier blog HERE.

Those of you that follow the bluebird cam may be wondering why the almost ready fledglings appear to be back in eggs :) Well, we have some sad news to deliver...last Wednesday night a Rat snake some how was able to find its way into the bluebird nest & eat the hatchlings. We know this because one of our employees saw it happen through the webcam. There was nothing we could do as it happened very quickly. Even with the manmade predator guard, nature still takes course, and, although it's sad, it's a reminder to us that everything needs to survive one way or another. It's also very important to remember that no single animal is worth more than another, AND we are proud to have around 50+ bluebird boxes on site that are being used successfully on a regular basis...here's some information on the new nest featured on our webcam:

1st egg laid June 9
4th egg (and last) laid June 13
Incubation started immediately after the last egg was laid
On average eggs take around 11 days to hatch, so, although they still weren't hatched this morning, it should be any day now!

Happy Bluebird watching! :o)
