Lewis Colam of Plymouth, England has reached the mid-way point of his long journey with a purpose Wednesday.
He is rowing his 15-foot canoe the 1,400 miles from Miami, Fla. to New York City, N.Y. to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Disease research.
Most of the voyage has been through the Intracoastal waterway, a network of rivers along the East Coast.
Colam stopped Tuesday in Georgetown at the Harborwalk Marina next to the Georgetown Times to meet a Pawleys Island couple who volunteered to let him stay the night.
On day 40 Wednesday, Colam was rowing up the Waccamaw River toward Myrtle Beach, the half-way point of his journey.
He points out that this trip is completely unsupported with no prearranged stops, and no power, sails or cabin on his boat.
“I’m incredibly thankful for the support people have shown along the way,” Colam said.
“I encourage people to get in touch if they think it is interesting. It is no easy feat to raise money for charity. I really appreciate people who pass their hard earned cash to help find a cure for this horrible disease.”
His goal is to raise $20,000, he said, and 100 percent of the money donated goes to that purpose.
