SC Wildlife: Blue Bird Nest WebCam

Our neighbors The North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve are at it again. They are doing another cool study and/or at least helping us see some of the great natural events that take place in our area.
I love Bluebirds (who doesn't?). We see them all around DeBordieu. I keep forgetting to place a Bluebird house in my yard. Thanks to NIWBNERR we can enjoy their Bluebirds. They placed a webcam in a Bluebird home.

Bluebird Webcam Spring 2012 These beautiful members of the thrush family range throughout Eastern North America and into Mexico and Central America. They live in open areas with little understory and nest in cavities. Bluebird populations declined dramatically in the early 20th century with the introduction of aggressive European Starlings and House Sparrows can outcompete native birds for limited nest cavities. Conservation efforts in the 1960’s and 1970’s to establish bluebird trails and provide nest boxes contributed to the recovery of bluebird populations in recent years. Bluebird boxes have been placed in several suitable areas on the Hobcaw Barony property to augment natural nest cavities that are in high demand by bluebirds and other cavity nesting birds including woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees.

The North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is one of 28 reserves around the coastal United States that form the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS). The NERRS was created in 1972, and is dedicated to conservation, research, education, and stewardship in America’s estuaries. The North Inlet-Winyah Bay (NIWB) NERR was established in 1992. Each reserve receives funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA), with matched resources from a host state agency. The North Inlet-Winyah Bay Reserve is hosted by the University of South Carolina’s Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences. We are headquartered at the internationally recognized Baruch Marine Field Laboratory in GeorgetownSouth CarolinaSouth Carolina is also home to another NERR, the ACE Basin NERRin the southern coastal region, which is hosted by the Department of Natural Resources.
