These beautiful members of the thrush family range throughout Eastern North America and into Mexico and Central America. They live in open areas with little understory and nest in cavities. Bluebird populations declined dramatically in the early 20th century with the introduction of aggressive European Starlings and House Sparrows can out compete native birds for limited nest cavities. Conservation efforts in the 1960’s and 1970’s to establish bluebird trails and provide nest boxes contributed to the recovery of bluebird populations in recent years. Bluebird boxes have been placed in several suitable areas on the Hobcaw Barony property to augment natural nest cavities that are in high demand by bluebirds and other cavity nesting birds including woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees.
